York Racecourse is one of the UK's best-known sporting venues, hosting the sport we are all familiar with, horse racing. With a history dating back to 1731, the venue also features areas dedicated to showcasing its heritage and background.
PERMABOUND was supplied to York Racecourse (via PERMABOUND stockist, GCL Products) as part of improvements to areas of the venue. This included the Knavesmire Tunnel, which leads through to its historical exhibition, as well as balconies of Private Boxes at the venue. The project used the PERMABOUND Space Grey blend, creating a clean and modern finish that complements the existing architecture and surroundings.
Working within an established and historic venue such as York Racecourse meant any new surfacing needed to be carefully considered in relation to its surroundings. The Knavesmire Tunnel forms part of the visitor route through the racecourse and provides access to an area showcasing the venue's history, with large photographic displays positioned along the walls.
As well as serving a practical purpose, the tunnel contains a mixture of existing materials and decorative features, including timber cladding and gold detailing. Introducing a new surface therefore required a solution that would sit comfortably within the space without competing visually with the displays or altering the character of the area.
The York Racecourse team installed the PERMABOUND Space Grey resin bound surfacing themselves, showcasing the versatility of the system and its suitability for projects undertaken by in-house teams.
Our Space Grey blend was used throughout the approximately 80m² tunnel, with additional surfaces completed on the hospitality box balconies. The finished photographs show the PERMABOUND surface providing a consistent finish along the walkway, creating a modern appearance while fitting naturally into the existing design of the racecourse.
The surfacing sits alongside the historical displays within the tunnel, helping to create a clean and welcoming route for visitors moving through the venue.
The finished PERMABOUND surfaces at York Racecourse provide a practical and visually appealing solution for areas that experience regular visitor traffic, while helping to improve the overall presentation of the venue.
We're proud to have been included in this project at one of Yorkshire’s most recognisable sporting venues. The finished result is a great example of how PERMABOUND surfacing can bring a fresh, modern appearance to established spaces while respecting the history, character and identity of the surroundings.
