Introduction

This case study centres on a community playground situated on the Isle of Benbecula, where a significant improvement to the surfacing of the area was required to ensure the safety of its users. Community play areas play a crucial role in promoting physical activity, creativity, and social interaction among children. PH Landscape were carefully selected by the play areas committee to complete the overhaul of the surface.

Challenge

Recognizing the paramount importance of ensuring the safety and comfort of young adventurers, the group required a rubber surfacing solution that achieved several key objectives:

  • Significantly reduce the risk of fall-related injuries,
  • Enable accessibility for all, including those with mobility challenges, to promote inclusivity,
  • Minimise the level of maintenance of the surface,
  • Weather resistant to endure wind, sun and rain, allowing year-round usage,
  • Provide a stable non-slip surface, ideal for running, jumping, and general play.

After careful consideration and consultation with the community group, the decision was made to use green PERMABOUND rubber mulch as a safety-focused, sustainable, vibrant and low-maintenance surfacing solution for their existing play equipment.

Installation

The installation process commenced with the removal of the existing play area surface, followed by meticulous groundwork preparation, which included creating a sub-base and installing a secure edge for the upcoming green rubber mulch surface.

The PH Landscape team began the installation by adding rubber mulch into their forced action mixer before pouring in the specialist PERMABOUND resin binder and mixing for 4 to 6 minutes to ensure complete coverage. The mixed mulch material was then transported to the installation area via a wheelbarrow, emptied, and roughly spread using a spazzle before being hand-troweled to create a seamless finish.

This mixing and laying process was repeated until the PERMABOUND mulch safety surface was completed. Following the recommended guidelines, the area was cordoned off for at least 72 hours to allow the mulch to cure completely, ensuring its safety for use.

Conclusion

The installation of PERMABOUND rubber mulch at the Balivanich Community play area has proven to be a resounding success, transforming an outdated play space into a safe, inclusive and engaging environment for local children to enjoy for years to come. The revitalised space received overwhelmingly positive responses from residents, parents and children.
